Type 2 Diabetes - The Importance Of Regular Blood Sugar Testing

You may have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes on the basis of a random blood glucose test during a physical examination or even a screening at a health fair when you were feeling perfectly healthy. One of the instructions given to you by your doctor was to have your blood sugar tested regularly. Although this holds a great deal of significance, it is often ignored by the majority of people. Even so, the importance of this one point is immeasurable.

In Type 2 diabetes, there is insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. Insulin resistance refers to the decreased tissue sensitivity to insulin. So in order to overcome insulin resistance and the high levels of blood sugar, an increased amount of insulin is needed. But in order to determine that value, blood sugar monitoring is essential.

There are various methods used to help you keep tabs on your blood sugar. Among these are:

self-monitoring,continuous blood glucose monitoring systems, glycated hemoglobin (hemoglobin A1c, sometimes HbA1c), andurine glucose testing.

Each plays an important role and is especially suited for the specific needs of the individual diabetic.

Blood sugar monitoring is not only an essential part of the management of Type 2 diabetes, it is the foundation of it.

Self-monitoring helps you to know:

when and how to respond to the results, andwhen to adjust your food intake

in order to obtain optimal blood sugar levels.

It is important to conduct this testing regularly and not just when you are feeling ill. By the time you begin to feel the symptoms of unbalanced blood sugar, it is likely things have gone too far out of the spectrum.

There are also critical times when you should automatically monitor your sugar:

after exercising, when you first wake up,two hours after commencing your meal, right before bed, andanytime you are sick...

... are just a few. These are all examples of when your levels can bounce back and forth, even though you may not immediately feel the effects.

Regular monitoring of your blood sugar allows for detection and prevention of hypoglycemia (decreased blood glucose levels), and hyperglycemia (increased blood glucose levels). It also plays a crucial role in eventually normalizing your blood glucose (or sugar) levels, which in turn reduces the risk of long-term diabetic complications. There is a laundry list of conditions a diabetic can experience if they do not keep their blood sugar level under control.

As you gain better control over your disease, the goal is for you to be able to cut down on your dependence of medication. When your blood sugar levels improve, discuss this with your doctor. When many diabetics lose weight from their abdominal area, they are often able to control their symptoms so they can quit their medication completely.

Type 2 Diabetes - How Alcohol Affects Blood Sugar

We know how the effects of alcohol can impact the body. From tissue, to how organs function, and to hormones, alcohol has the ability to negatively impact all of them, and more. But what exactly does alcohol do to blood sugar? And just how destructive are those effects long-term?

To understand how destructive alcohol is to blood sugar, you first have to understand exactly what it is that is being damaged. Glucose is the energy source for the body. The level of glucose in the body's blood is partially regulated by hormones. Without the right amount of glucose the body beings to suffer. One of the areas that is largely affected by a lack of glucose is the brain since the brain does not have the capability to manufacture or store glucose.

When an individual consumes alcohol, the alcohol interferes with the sources of glucose and how it's supply is regulated by hormones. This is further inhibited by the fact that alcoholics typically are not very interested in proper nutrition. Therefore, they are not getting the right amount of glucose from their choices of foods. Now, the effects of alcohol are interfering in two ways.

Alcoholics have a common tendency to skip meals because they are "drinking" them. This is interference number three. As an alcoholic is drinking, the body's glucose supply is restricted because the body is so focused on trying to metabolize the alcohol. Interference number four.

When you take numbers three and four and combine them, this is what is happening while the body is simultaneously experiencing episodes of very low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. These episodes can hit a few hours after a period of heavy drinking, or they can be held off for even as long as a day or two.

As if the concept of a hypoglycemic episode wasn't enough, the body is unable to counteract the effects of the low blood sugar because the presence of massive amounts of alcohol are impeding it. Hormones, which would normally be called in to help out are restricted by alcohol. Interference number five.

All of these reasons are why many alcoholics can eventually develop Type 2 diabetes.

Many people harbor the belief that only acute alcoholics or those who have other health issues are at risk of having their blood sugar affected so dramatically. This could not be farther from the truth. Alcohol can affect the blood sugar levels in the healthiest of individuals, no matter what their medical history is or their level of fitness.

Do You Crave Sugar? Are You Constantly Hungry? Do You Always Feel Tired?

How many of us really give any thought to what happens to our food after we eat it? Why would we? If we feel good and can function all day, we commonly assume that everything inside our body is going well.

Our body is so perfectly designed, and its highest priority is to maintain homeostasis (all your body's systems working together to maintain an ideal environment). One of the greatest things about its design is that we don't have to worry about our body's internal mechanisms and what happens to our food once we have swallowed it. It is all taken care of without any conscious thought from us. Sometimes however, a wrench is thrown in our "gears" and causes some sort of dysfunction. Fortunately, our body gives us warning signals and symptoms that let us know something is wrong.

Do you feel tired all the time, constantly hungry, tired after meals? Do you have cravings for sugar, difficulty losing weight, or aches and pains? These are signs that something in your body is not functioning properly. No matter what, it is not normal to experience any of these symptoms on a regular basis! Have you been to the doctor and your blood work is normal so you received no answers? Were you prescribed medication but you still feel the same way? This is because the treatment you received was not appropriate for the true cause of your issues.

In the United States, we hear about diabetes all the time. Currently over 25 million adults and children have been diagnosed with diabetes. This statistic may not seem to alarming, or may even sound reassuring, because we all know someone who is diabetic. But what about the 79 million people currently with pre-diabetes? How often do we hear about them and what are we doing about it?

What is pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes a period of dysfunction that occurs prior to the onset of the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. This is also commonly termed insulin resistance (pre-diabetes and insulin resistance are actually two different conditions, but they are remarkably similar).

So what is insulin?

Insulin a hormone made in the pancreas that controls sugar (glucose) levels in the blood. It is released in response to eating food.

What does insulin have to do with difficulty losing weight?

If your body becomes resistant to insulin, the cells in your body are not able to efficiently take glucose from circulation and burn it for energy. Instead of using it for energy, your body needs to get it out of your bloodstream one way or another, so it is stored as fat.

What does this mean to you?

Is your fasting blood glucose currently 85-99 mg/dl? If it is, that is great! You are on the right path. Next, take a look at what you are eating.

If your diet is not what it should be, don't be afraid! You are the only person who can make the decision to change it!

If you want to learn more about how the vicious cycle of insulin resistance affects your body, have already started experiencing any of these symptoms, or if you have a glucose number above 100 the time to act is now.

Type 2 Diabetes - The Importance Of Using A Blood Sugar Meter

The device necessary for calculating blood sugar levels is known as a blood glucose meter, a glucometer or monitor. Using a glucometer is a simple process and this convenient device provides reliable results in only a few seconds. It makes sense for almost everyone with diabetes to have a monitor on hand. This is the fastest and simplest way to detect whether you have higher or lower than normal blood sugar levels. They're quick... you'll know your numbers within seconds. By helping you keep your blood sugar in line, your monitor can help you ward off diabetes-associated conditions such as heart disease and neuropathy.

Until manufacturers come up with a needle-less lancet device that is affordable, a blood sugar check will involve a needle prick. Finger-prick testing is usually performed on the four fingers, not the thumb. When using a glucometer, the blood is dribbled onto a special paper test strip and then inserted into a convenient opening in the monitor. As technology has advanced, so have the requirements for blood sampling. Now, only a tiny speck of blood is required.

It is important to consult with your health care provider to determine what an accurate reading is for you. As individuals differ, so does diabetes itself. What is a comfortable level for one person might not be accurate for another. Appropriate target blood sugar levels are often determined on a case-by-case basis. The acceptable range two hours after the start of a meal is usually less than 180 mg/dL or 10 mmol/L.

Although all readings are helpful, readings taken in the morning, before meals, two hours after meals, and before bedtime, give particularly valuable clues as to whether your diabetes management is on track. You and your doctor will come up with a testing schedule that will give sufficient information without you having to test your blood sugar constantly.

Following this type of close monitoring, peaks and valleys in blood sugar can be detected quickly so that the appropriate action can be taken. This reduces the level of stress your body goes through with abnormal levels.

When blood sugar is carefully monitored, people with Type 2 diabetes are in a position to choose the type and range of food they need to keep levels balanced.

Using a glucometer has become simplified and easy. Some are unusually small and light with large displays or audio readouts for those who are visually impaired. Make sure you talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or diabetes instructor about your preferences. What matters more than the brand or the features the glucometer offers, is that you use the proper testing technique and record the information consistently.

Type 2 Diabetes - Blood Sugar, Inflammation and Blood Vessel Disease

Preventing heart and blood vessel disease is a major concern in anyone diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a disease of inflammation and is associated with inflamed and clogged blood vessels, a condition called atherosclerosis. According to the National Institute of Health, interleukin-6 (IL-6), is involved in a number of immune functions, including inflammation. Inflammation can be useful in response to infections, but chronic inflammation can be a detriment.

According to recent studies, IL-6 is associated with atherosclerosis and with poorly controlled diabetes. A study published in the Polish Journal of Cardiology in 2011, looked at the relationship between narrowed arteries and inflammatory molecules, including IL-6. Two hundred and seventy-nine participants with narrowed arteries were included in the study. In two years, high levels of IL-6 were associated with the worsening of atherosclerosis.

Researchers in the Hospital of the Virgin of Victoria in Malaga, Spain, looked at inflammation in white blood cells of volunteers with atherosclerosis and compared the levels of inflammatory molecules with blood sugar levels. Their results were published in the medical journal Acta Diabetolgia in December 2011.

The twenty-two diabetics with atherosclerosis were compared with eight non-diabetic controls.

blood cells from the diabetics were found to have more IL-6 than those from the non-diabetic volunteers. Diabetic participants with hemoglobin A1c levels of 6.5 or less had less IL-6 than those with hemoglobin A1c levels of over 6.5.when sugar was added to blood cells that had been removed from the participants, the cells were found to increase their levels of IL-6. When insulin was added, the level of IL-6 decreased.

From this the researchers concluded controlling blood sugar levels could prevent too much IL-6 from being produced.

Hemoglobin A1c is a measure of blood sugar control for approximately the previous three months. A normal level is from 4 to 6 percent. The usual goal for diabetics is a level below 7. It is a good idea to have the test performed every 3 months when it is abnormal, and many diabetics will have it performed twice a year when the results are normal. Patients who are taking supplements of vitamins C or E should mention this to their doctor, since the supplements can affect test results.

Blood sugar control is a matter of taking in the same amount of sugar and carbohydrates:

as are being burned off through activity,of keeping muscles sensitive to insulin, andkeeping up a medication regimen if needed.

Eating foods high in fiber can help to keep sugar from being absorbed too rapidly, so blood levels do not go abnormally high suddenly. Physical activity will keep the muscles sensitive to insulin, so that they will be able to take in sugar and use it for energy.

It is in your interest to discuss with your doctor or dietitian a plan for:

eating the right food types in the right amounts, taking part in the right kind and amount of physical activity, andtaking the right dose of medication at the right times.

Diabetes On The Rise

Diabetes is on the rise, yet in most cases, diabetes is also preventable. A healthy lifestyle changes can reverse diabetes. Your blood sugar levels can be improved by making small changes in the way you eat, adding in a little more exercise, and losing even a modest amount of weight.

What Is High Blood Sugar?

The glucose level is the amount of glucose or sugar found in the blood. Glucose is a sugar that comes from the food we eat, and it's also formed and stored inside the body. It's the main source of energy for the cells of our body, and it's carried to each cell through the bloodstream.

Hyperglycemia is a term used for high blood sugar levels, where glucose builds up in the blood. High sugar levels happen when the body either can't make insulin (type 1 diabetes) or can't respond to insulin properly (type 2 diabetes). The body needs insulin so glucose in the blood can enter the cells of the body where it can be used for energy.

Hyperglycemia, if not treated, can damage the vessels that supply blood to vital organs, which can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, and nerve problems.

Symptoms of High Blood Sugar Levels

People often experience the below symptoms when blood sugar levels are high:

People with high sugar levels need to urinate more often and in larger amountsPeople who lose fluid from urinating more often become more thirstyThe body begins to break down muscle and stored fat, losing weight even though your appetite has stayed the sameFeeling tired all the time

Reason for High Blood Sugar Level

Not getting enough insulin or other diabetes medication can cause a high blood sugar levels. Diabetes medications may need to be changed or be adjusted, but before doing so, check with your diabetes health care team. Make sure that you take the proper type of insulin and the correct dose at the right time, and that all equipment such as pumps and meters are working, and that the insulin has not expired.

Not following the meal plan set can cause a high blood sugar levels. Work with a registered dietitian to make adjustments to your meal plan as needed. Adjust insulin/pills when you eat more or less than recommended on your meal plan.

Not getting enough exercise can cause a high blood sugar levels. Regular exercise maintains your weight and can improve your insulin sensitivity. One of the easiest moderate-intensity activities is walking for 30 minutes five or more times a week, swimming or riding a bike.

Illness or stress have increased, can cause a high blood sugar levels. Contact your diabetes health care team or seek ideas on how to manage stress from others suffering from stress.

The use of other medications can increase blood sugar levels. Contact your diabetes health care team if you start taking any other medication, otherwise your insulin or pills may need to be adjusted while you take the medication that's causing high blood sugar levels.

Controlling High Blood Sugar Levels

Changing your lifestyle doesn't mean living in deprivation. You can continue to eat and enjoy your favorite foods, and best of all, you don't have to give up sweets or resign to carbohydrate counting. But you'll probably need to learn some better eating habits. But what does eating right for diabetes mean? A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that is high in nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories.

The diabetes community supports you and the changes you make to your lifestyle. Within this community you can ask questions and discuss your insulin or meal plans, and compare to see whether they may need adjusting, or you may have an equipment issue, like an insulin pump that isn't working properly. Whatever the case, you can raise it within the diabetes community, to ensure you can get your blood sugar levels back under control.

Type 2 Diabetes - Exercise Helps Improve Insulin Sensitivity and Blood Sugar Levels!

Exercise or physical activity is just as important as diet and, in some cases, as important as drugs in managing Type 2 diabetes. Physical activity is recommended as a powerful way of preventing and treating Type 2 diabetes because it:

lowers blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity, lets you store more blood sugar, burns more body fat, keeps weight off, dramatically reduces the risk of heart disease, prevents or delays Type 2 diabetes, reduces stress, prevents or delays retinopathy, prevents or delays neuropathy.

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Nord-Trondelag University in Norway, Mid-Sweden University, and the Hormone Laboratory at Oslo University Hospital, Aker, Norway, studied two types of exercise: endurance resistance training and maximal resistance training, to determine what type might be better for preventing various conditions.

Resistance exercise: This is the kind of exercise in which the muscles are worked against a physical force. Lifting weights and doing push-ups are classic examples of resistance movements. In lifting weights the exerciser is working the muscles against the force of gravity pulling down on the weights. Push-ups allow the whole body, being pulled down by gravity, to present resistance against the arm muscles.

Resistance training: Endurance resistance training involves working the muscles against moderate forces with many repetitions, while maximal training of this type consists of working the muscles against the most force possible for a relatively short amount of time.

Study Results: The study, published in the Journal of Strength Conditioning Research in January 2012, included 18 participants with really poor ability to handle dietary sugar...

one group engaged in maximal resistance training, whilethe second group was assigned endurance resistance training.

Both types of exercise were found to be beneficial. By the end of the study participants in the maximal resistance training group showed:

lowered blood sugar levels, reduced insulin resistance, andlowered C-peptide levels (C-peptide is produced along with insulin, and high levels can mean that the body is struggling against insulin resistance).

Volunteers in the endurance resistance training group showed:

reduced levels of insulin, better insulin sensitivity, andimproved pancreatic function,as well as improved ability of their muscles to take in sugar and use it as energy.

From this study it was concluded both types of resistance training could be useful for preventing Type 2 diabetes.

The Mayo Clinic recommends resistance training for other benefits as well as preventing Type 2 diabetes. Other conditions that can be prevented or managed include:

osteoporosis,arthritis,back pain,depression, andobesity.

Your bones are constantly being broken down and built up, and resistance training helps to tilt the balance in favor of building up. As we age our bones have the tendency to become brittle and fracture easily, a condition known as osteoporosis, which resistance training can help to prevent or even reverse.

Building up the muscles that move the joints can help to reduce joint pain in arthritis. Our backs have not been upright for very long in the evolutionary scale of things, and back pain is not uncommon. Building up muscles in the back can make them more fit to hold up the back bones and internal organs.

Exercise helps your body to build up endorphins, a good way to fight depression. As the muscles become better developed they will use up more calories, helping to prevent and diminish overweight and obesity.

Why not discuss with your doctor whether a plan for resistance training might be right for you.

Healthy Habits for Managing Blood Sugar Range Levels

For many people today, keeping their blood sugar range within numbers that are satisfactory can be difficult. Many people find themselves dealing with diseases such as diabetes or hypoglycemia by taking prescription medication. Since both of these diseases can be the result of too much glucose in the blood, it is important for a person to find ways to cut excess glucose from their body.

Glucose is a sugar that the body uses for energy. We obtain glucose from the foods we eat such as carbohydrates, sweets and other foods. It is very vital to a healthy body. However, if the body does not manage it correctly it can result in issues such as diabetes or hypoglycemia. While researchers have come a long way in developing medications that can deal with helping the body manage glucose levels, there are also more natural ways that this can be accomplished.

One of the best ways for a person to manage normal blood sugar range numbers is by eating a healthy diet. People who strive to stick to a diet that is balanced may find that this resolves many of the issues they have with their blood sugar levels. A healthy diet is based on fruits, vegetables and whole grains that are low in fat. It limits intake of sweets and animal products.

In addition, it is important to maintain a regular exercise regimen. Physical activity can be a big asset to anyone who is watching blood glucose levels. Exercise can help by using glucose as fuel for the body. By adding 30 minutes of walking a day, a person can experience big changes in their overall health. Adding a pedometer to a walking program lets a person keep track of how much they are actually walking. Many authorities recommend 10,000 steps a day for good health. That may sound like a lot, but can be done in an hour of vigorous walking a day.

For those who are concerned with their blood sugar levels, seeking a doctor's advice is very critical. However, in many cases by working with one's physician a person may be able to gain control of their blood sugar by making their lifestyle a healthier one. Sedentary lifestyles often sneak up on a person, just like those extra pounds around the middle. Everyone has a choice, stay with that sedentary lifestyle or get off the coach and outside and get moving.

Type 2 Diabetes - How To Lower Blood Sugar Naturally!

Blood sugar is not only important for diabetics, but it also comes in handy for those with a weight issue or if an individual is insulin resistant. Controlling blood sugar levels can work miracles not just for weight loss but also for avoiding the many complications of Type 2 diabetes. So knowing how to lower blood sugar is one thing: but knowing how to do it naturally and safely is completely different.

There are several ways to lower your blood sugar level naturally. Why would anyone need to do that? Because of the nature of diabetes. Food is broken down into glucose, which the body would normally use for fuel. But in order for this to happen as it is intended, the body also has to release insulin from the pancreas to help assist glucose in making its way into cells.

But if an individual is overweight, as many diabetics are, the cells become insulin resistant where the cells will not allow insulin to carry sugar into the cells. Or the individual could experience frequent episodes of hyperglycemia. In either case, it is important for the person to produce lower blood sugar levels.

The easiest way to bring down your blood sugar levels is to exercise. Muscles burn sugar and they do it in an efficient manner. It can help your Type 2 diabetes by increasing your body's sensitivity. Exercise not only burns off excess sugar, but regular exercise stimulates a series of events in your body composition: it reduces the amount of fat and increases the amount of lean tissue, muscle, fibers and bone. It also reduces blood pressure and the "bad" cholesterol and increases the "good" cholesterol.

Protein helps to neutralize carbs by slowing down the rate at which they are broken down by your body. Protein also gives you a clear source of energy, something that carbs do, but, in this case, a much healthier option.

Another method is to include fiber in your diet. There are two kinds of fiber, soluble which is gel-forming, and insoluble. Both help to prevent constipation, but only the soluble fibers found in fruit, vegetables, legumes and oats, affect your blood sugar control. An Italian study of adults with diabetes, compared a low-fiber diet with a high-fiber diet high in fruit, legumes, and vegetables. The high-fiber diet resulted in lower blood sugar levels and a lower HbA1c percentage.

Garlic has been used for thousands of years as a natural method to aid in the control of blood sugar. The oils found in garlic have been found to confer many benefits. As well as helping the immune response, garlic has been shown to help lower cholesterol and triglycerides and has a positive effect on the control of blood sugar.

Not into garlic? Try cinnamon. In its natural state, in a pill or sprinkled on certain foods, cinnamon is one of the best tasting natural methods you can find. If you are on a high-carbohydrate diet, then adding Cinnamomum cassia cinnamon to your eating plan may make a difference to the control of your blood sugar. If you are on a carbohydrate restricted diet, the cinnamon that is usually added to oatmeal or apple pies, makes a slight difference in how quickly sugars are released into your bloodstream.

Type 2 Diabetes - Garlic for Lowering Blood Sugar Levels

Garlic contains sulfur compounds that are believed to be responsible for their anti-diabetic qualities. S-allyl cysteine sulphoxide in garlic is one of these... it has been reported to decrease fasting blood sugar and lower cholesterol levels.

Studies on the use of garlic for treating diabetes have had mixed results, so researchers at the University of Karachi, in Pakistan, designed a study to discover whether it could lower blood sugar levels. Their results were published in the Pakistani Journal of Pharmaceutical Science in October 2011.

The study: Sixty people with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes were included in the study:

half were given 300 mg of a garlic pill three times a day, and 500 mg of Metformin twice a day, while theother half were given a placebo and 500 mg of Metformin twice daily.

At the end of 24 weeks the group taking garlic pills showed:

a more than 3 per cent decrease in their fasting blood sugar, as well asa more than 2 per cent decrease in total blood cholesterol, andmore than 5 per cent decrease in blood fats.HDL, the good kind of cholesterol, was increased in the garlic group by more than 6 per cent.

It was therefore concluded garlic in combination with Metformin could be a useful treatment for Type 2 diabetes.

The supplements used in the study were supplied by the KWAI company, which advertises their tablets have all the same elements as fresh garlic, dehydrated. That being the case, then fresh garlic could presumably be used in place of, or in combination with, supplements.

Recipes for fresh garlic: For cooks who are really fond of garlic, vegweb.com suggests drizzling them with olive oil and microwaving them to a crisp. Eat as a snack or sprinkle over salads. The same website offers a recipe for garlic eggplant, which also includes onion, mushrooms, tomatoes, basil, and pepper. Vegweb also has recipes for garlicky rice and peas and two salad dressings made with garlic. English chef and healthful foods crusader Jamie Oliver has at his website a recipe for sauted Jerusalem artichokes with bay leaves and garlic. He recommends eating the dish in soup or warm salad. Garlic-central.com offers a recipe for garlic mushrooms with butter (substitute olive oil), hot pepper sauce (optional) and pepper.

The latter part of October and November are garlic-planting time in the northern hemisphere. Plan for a harvest around March. In the meantime, buy big, plump, firm garlic bulbs with tight, silky paper-like skins. Each mature bulb contains about 10 to 20 cloves. Remove any sprouts before cooking, since they can add a bitter flavor.

Also, eat more onions, as they have many of the same beneficial compounds as garlic.

Maintaining Healthy Blood Sugar Is for Everybody

In my research on central obesity I came to the realization that even though I am not overweight I can still have spikes in my blood sugar that can be damaging to me and I want to throughout this article help others realize the importance of maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.

Have you ever noticed that when you go without eating there comes a point in the day that you become really cranky and irritable? Those sudden mood swings is your body reacting to going hungry for too long. Skipping meals, overeating, and eating certain foods can cause a spike in your blood sugar.

The body desires to control our blood sugars by producing insulin. Over the years of eating an unhealthy diet the body becomes less sensitive to its own insulin. Insulin is what drives sugar into the cell to be stored as fat. When the body becomes insensitive to its own insulin it creates more insulin. Causing the pancreas to work harder and harder. Insulin helps keep our blood sugar levels normal. Although these elevated insulin levels control our blood sugar levels they can also lead to some serious health problems. Here is a list:

significant inflammation of the arteries, which can cause a heart attack and strokeelevated blood pressure (hypertension)elevated triglycerideslowered HDL (good) cholesterolincreased LDL (bad) cholesterolincreased tendency to form blood clotsdevelopment of significant "uncontrolled" weight gain--usually around the middle (central obesity)

One of the single most important things we can do to prevent this insulin resistance is to cut back on carbohydrates that release sugar into the blood stream at a much faster rate. White bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes release their sugars into the bloodstream even faster than table sugar. These types of foods are known as high glycemic. On the other hand foods like green beans, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, apples, and oranges release their sugars into the bloodstream at a much more slower rate and are known as low-glycemic foods. A high fiber diet that includes foods that are low-glycemic is very effective in controlling blood sugar.

Diabetes mellitus has become one of the most widespread diseases in existence. Over the past 35 yrs diabetes has increased fivefold. If you notice that your blood pressure or your waistline is increasing it is pretty likely that you have developed a serious case of insulin resistance. Do not wait until you have full-blown diabetes because once you have developed insulin resistance major damage is already being done to your arteries and cardiovascular damage has already begun. With heart disease being the number one killer in the United States every year except one since 1900 we need to develop healthy lifestyle changes to prevent it now. Not controlling our blood sugar will continual cause damage to our arteries and over time create major health issues.

Insulin resistance is reversible. Treating your insulin resistance by making healthy lifestyle changes is true preventative medicine. Making simple effective lifestyle changes not only prevents accelerated damage to our arteries but prevents full-blown diabetes from occurring. A healthier lifestyle will make a difference.

A healthier lifestyle includes choosing foods that are high in fiber and also foods that have a low glycemic index. You need to also balance your diet with good protein (low in saturated fat) and good fats (Omega 3's and 6). When this diet is combined with moderate excercise (daily walking will do) and a good cellular nutrition program insulin resistance can be prevented and eliminated. The weight will start coming off as mysteriously as it came on without even really trying. You begin to feel good and your energy level will increase.

The difference between making healthy lifestyle changes and a "fad diet" it that with a fad diet you start with the intention of one day quitting. I am talking about a healthy lifestyle that has the side effects of fat loss.

People do not realize how easy making healthy lifestyle changes is. I am talking modest exercise, eating in such a manner that doesn't spike sugar levels and taking some basic nutritional supplements to improve your sensitivity to your own insulin.

The following are good fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. When you combine these in each meal or snack you eat, your blood sugar will not jump to dangerous levels that need controlling.

The best proteins and fats come from vegetables and vegetable oils. Avocados, olive oil, nuts, beans, soy, and so on are great sources of protein and contain fats that will actually lower your cholesterol.

The best carbohydrates come from fresh whole fruits and vegetables. Avoid all processed food. An apple is better than apple juice or applesauce, Whole grains are essential, and avoiding processed grains is critical in developing a healthy diet for everyone, especially the diabetic.

The next best proteins and fats come from fish. Cold water fish such as mackerel, tuna, salmon, and sardines, contain omega-3 fatty acids. These fats not only lower cholesterol but they decrease the overall inflammation in our bodies.

The next best protein comes from fowl (chicken, turkey) because the fat is on the outside of the bird in the skin and can be removed leaving a good source of lean protein.

When you eat this way your body produces glucagon instead of releasing insulin. Glucagon utilizes fat, lowers blood pressure, decreases triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and raises HDL cholesterol.

Several studies have shown that all antioxidants may improve insulin resistance. It is important that a diabetic take a good mixture of several antioxidants in supplementation at optimal- not RDA- levels. There are several macronutrients that are normally deficient in people with insulin resistance and full-blown diabetes.

Chromium is critical in the metabolism of glucose and the action of insulin. Studies show that 90% of the population has a chromium deficiency. Chromium has been shown to greatly improve insulin sensitivity.Vitamin E not only improves antioxidant defenses but also seems to help the body with the problem of insulin resistance. Research has shown that a low vitamin E level is an independent and strong predictor of the development of adult-onset diabetes. Individuals who have low Vitamin E levels have a fivefold higher risk of developing diabetes.Magnesium deficit. Studies show that when this deficiency is corrected in the elderly insulin function improves significantly.Vanadium is not a well known mineral but it is very important to the diabetic and has been shown to significantly improve insulin resistance.

Symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst and frequent urination (especially at night), unexplained increase in appetite, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, erection problems, blurred vision and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. If you are experiencing symptoms contact your doctor to have a blood glucose test done.

Nov 19, The Glycemic Index & Its Benefits - Blood Sugar Levels

Low Gi Pasta Dish image uploaded to flickr by PhyrePh0X

Many diabetics successfully base their diabetic diets on the Glycemic Index (or Gi) but does that mean you can benefit from the Glycemic Index too?

Several studies have shown that the Glycaemic Index has a beneficial effect on your blood sugar levels and can therefore, help to improve your diabetes control. So keep reading to discover how you too can benefit from Gi Foods...

So what's so special about the Glycemic Index?

The Glycemic Index is basically a ranking system for carbohydrates, foods that break down into glucose when they're digested.

Foods with a High Glycemic index - or High Gi - will release sugar into your bloodstream rapidly and will spike your blood sugar levels (which could lead to hyperglycemia).

But if your food has a Low Gi, it will gradually release sugar over time, making you feel fuller for longer and will help stabalise your blood sugar levels and prevent a Hypoglycemic Attack.

In a nutshell, following the gylcemic index in your diabetic diet will help you understand how your blood sugar levels will react to certain foods and can help you improve your diabetes control.

This is why many diabetics successfully use the Gi diet to control their blood sugar levels and even lose weight.

Can the Glycemic Index really help me lose weight?

Eating foods that are broken down slowly will give you a steady release of energy. This way you won't feel hungry so often. Making it easier to avoid the cookie jar :^)

Combine this with a balanced diet - as seen in the Food Groups page - and you'll find it easier to improve your weight control, helping you to lose weight!

How is it measured?

The Glycemic Index scales from 0-100 and is split into 3 groups:

Anything with a high GI get absorbed into our bloodstream faster than other Gi foods. Some of these foods can still be healthy in a balanced meal, but when eaten on their own, high Gi foods tend to spike your blood sugar levels.
These foods scale from 70-100, Glucose being at 100.

Example of high GI foods: Most of the foods in the Simple Sugars food group.

Foods with a medium GI are scaled from 56-69. Eating these foods won't necessarily benefit your blood sugar levels but generally won't spike them.

Example of medium GI foods: Some beans, pulses and tofu have low-medium GI's making them great vegetarian meals in combination with other low GI foods.
Also, most of the foods in the Fruit and veg food group have medium GI's. You don't have to worry too much about this unless you have huge portions.

Foods with a low GI are digested slowly, meaning they release energy and sugar, slowly (maintaining your blood sugar levels) and keep you fuller for longer. Wholesome foods are an example.
These foods scale from 0-55.

Example of low GI foods: Most of the foods in the Grains food group.

Alternate measurement: Glycemic Load (GL)

Whilst this isn't as common as the GI, it is sometimes better. They are GI values that take into account the typical portion size.

For example, fruit and veg moves from medium on the GI scale, to low on the GL scale. I won't say anything else about it as it can get confusing. Also, it is harder to get used to. But if you'd like more information on the GL keep reading.

Do I have to avoid all high GI foods?

Not really. There may be a time when you might need a high GI snack to quickly recover energy. I referred to this here, on the Simple Sugars page.

But there's even more flexibility to Gi foods. High Gi foods aren't necessarily unhealthy. Brown rice and baked potatoes fit this bill as they have high Gi values.

But you wouldn't normally eat a plain baked potato or brown rice by itself would you?

So the rest of the food on your plate can reduce the average GI of your meal and that's what's important.

If you combine high GI foods with low GI foods the overall GI rating is reduced. So you can eat sweet and savoury dishes with little worry, at any time of the day.

How will I know the GI/GL of a food?

Supermarkets are getting good at labelling own-brand foods with a low GI label. So you can pick up similar, branded foods as they will have a similar GI.

Glycemic Index (and sometimes Glycemic Load) values will usually appear on the back/side of the package underneath the Food Label and may sometimes have a Gi logo.

Overtime you will easily be able to tell whether a food as a low, medium or high GI. Until then, here's a list of many foods and their GI values.

A complimentary food database that can help you manage your diabetic diet is the Calories in food Gadget. It will give you the real food labels for any food you type in, giving you useful nutritional information on its calories, cholesterol, sugar content and more.
